Is The Anklet Back?
Are bare ankles out? Calvin Klein showed a chunky gold chain with pared-down platform sneakers for Spring 2016. Sophie Buhai, maker of minimalist jewelry for her eponymous line as well as runway jewelry for Christophe Lemaire, recently Instagrammed a compelling image of a simple silver chain adorning a classic black heel (#Manolo?) captioned ‘Power Anklet.’ And Clare Waight Keller outfitted the #Chloégirls in beachy, charm versions of the anklet, hanging languidly atop simple slides and mixing in among the ankle ties of strappy, knotted sandals.
All of this raises the question: Is now the time to invest in an elevated ankle bracelet? We say, yes. When compared to bracelets, anklets make a powerful statement, more talisman than simple accessory. Add to that the fact that we’ve already traded in our skinny jeans for cropped, wide-leg pants — a 70s-inspired trend with staying power — and that with any luck summer means days spent barefoot or in sandals on a beach or lawn somewhere, and it’s clear the ankle is a zone prime for adornment.
How to choose a style? To keep it feeling modern, pick something minimal. Instead of floral or shell motifs, opt for delicate chains and tiny abstract charms. If you go for something more substantial, stick with streamlined styles like simple chain links or pearls.
